on freezing nights with a cloth sheet (preferably elevated off the leaves). Evidence of frost damage
include dieback of leaves, shoots, and/or stems. If a plant has already been burned by frost,
leave the damage alone until spring (end of March) when the threat of freezing temperatures is
minimal. It can protect the plant from further harm.
Pruning might stimulate new growth, which would be vulnerable to late frosts. The frost-damaged
leaves and stems will continue to help trap warm air within the canopy. In addition, the damage is
often not nearly as bad as it initially looked, new growth may come out of tissue that you thought
was dead. Prune out dead wood only after new growth starts in the spring. If you do not see new
growth by the end of March, replace the plant.
Please pick up your mail ASAP! Mailboxes are being vandalized throughout the Natomas area
and RCC Residents are encouraged by the Post Office to pick up their mail as soon as possible
before it gets dark.

I Smell Gas - GAS LEAKS have been discovered in our community in the recent past and RCC
residents are urged to call PG&E right away if you suspect a leak. One of our homeowners who
discovered a leak at the front of his property, when he noticed his grass was dying, recommends
etc:
"I would say anyone experiencing gas smell's/ leaks should always call PG&E directly and they
will dispatch a field supervisor to inspect and create a work order, if necessary. I just happened to
have a great crew assigned to my work order and followed up with them. I find it is really is up to
the home owner to supervise the crew if you want the job done right and to have a clear
understanding of what will/will not be done. Also good to ask up front what portion a home owner
could be responsible for. They did tell me that this area's gas lines are old and failing and any
smells detected by the meter reader are being reported."
PG&E Reminds Customers Of The Following Natural Gas Safety Tips:
Natural gas is odorless and colorless. As a safety precaution, PG&E adds a sulfur-like odor
(which many liken to the smell of rotten eggs) to natural gas to help people identify a natural gas
leak.
If you suspect a natural gas leak:
- Leave the area immediately and move to a safe location.
- Dial 9-1-1 and call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000.
- Warn others to stay away from the area.
- Do not attempt to extinguish a natural gas fire or stop the flow of natural gas.
- Do not try to operate natural gas pipeline valves.
- Never use matches or candles to look for natural gas leaks, and never turn on or off any
electric switches if you suspect a natural gas leak.
- You should never start an engine, use a home or cell phone, or operate electric devices
such as door bells, radios, televisions, lights, appliances or garage door openers in an
area where a natural gas leak is suspected.
Weeds
After the fall and winter rains, grass weeds and others start coming up. Weeds have sprung
up between cracks in the sidewalks, driveways, and gutters. They are springing up in lawns,
ground covers, shrub plantings, flower beds and rock beds.
Your RCC association expects you to remove them. It is easier to pull weeds when they are small
seedlings and the soil is wet. For harder to pull weeds, try needle-nosed pliers. Make sure to get
all of the root systems so they do not grow back. Also, remove them before they produce flowers
and start spreading seeds through the neighborhood.

Notes From Nancy - Finding My Way Home:
It was early 2009 that we decided that we wanted to move out of our mini-mansion and find a
place that we could call home. The house we were living in (which we owned) did not feel like
home, not even after seven years.
My partner Billie had a friend named Marcia that she lived with many years ago in a place called
“River City Commons” (RCC). I had driven through the area only to drop Billie off at Marcia’s
home, but didn’t know much about the community.
After much talking and thinking, between Billie and I, we decided to see if we could buy a home in
RCC.
To make a very long story short, we bought a house in RCC. When I walk down our walkway now
and put my key in the door, I know that I am home. The feel of the house is wonderful. The
specialness is hard to describe. I feel as though I was wandering for years and now I am finally
home. The people who live in RCC that I have met, are so easy to be friends with. They all pretty
much feel like family, like people that I have known for a long time.
It took many years to finally find my way home, but I found it in River City Commons. My goal in
“Notes from Nancy” is to put some human interest into our newsletter and enhance our
community.

Money Saving Energy Solutions - Inexpensive Energy Solutions
Every home is different. With a quick trip to your local hardware store, you have
even more choices at hand. Choose ENERGY STAR® Products. Replace
incandescent light bulbs with ENERGY STAR compact fluorescent light bulbs,
especially in high-use light fixtures. Compact fluorescent lights use 75 percent
less energy than incandescent lights.
Plug your home's leaks. Install weather-stripping or caulk leaky doors and windows and install
gaskets behind outlet covers. Savings up to 10 percent on energy costs. Install low flow
showerheads. If you do not already have them, low-flow shower heads and faucets can
drastically cut your hot water expenses. Savings of 10-16 percent of water heating costs.
Wrap the hot water tank with jacket insulation. This is especially valuable for older water heaters
with little internal insulation. Be sure to leave the air intake vent uncovered when insulating a gas
water heater. Savings up to 10 percent on water heating costs.

Residents in Natomas who see street flooding are encouraged to call 3-1-1 and report the
location so a crew can be dispatched to the scene. - Natomas Buzz

RCCA featured again in the CA Modern mag Click here to view the article featured in the CA
Modern Winter 2010 Magazine. RCCA residence should also have received a hard copy of the
magazine in the mail.
If you've ever wondered why our Board of Directors addresses issues of property maintenance
that some may consider nit-picky, please take the time to read the article in the Winter 2010 issue
of CA Modern. Under the title "Moves that lock in the value of your home," RCC was cited as
being an organized neighborhood that is focused on keeping up property values though the
enforcement of our rules about architectural preservation and general upkeep. Two of our
homeowners, Nick and Amy Correale, are featured in the article because of their efforts to keep
up the property next door to their home and being diligent in picking up trash that others leave on
our streets. Billie Parish and Nancy Nickle are also featured on the website as newcomers to
RCC, with a photo of Billie on "moving day."
For a photo of Nick talking to President Pat Sandlin, go to www.EichlerNetwork.com and take a

Being Prepared for the Unexpected - "Having access to your important family documents is
essential during and after a disaster. A copy of these documents should be kept in your
survival/evacuation kits. You should have a recent photo of all family members, including pets
(photographed from both sides to show unique markings). You may want to laminate these
photos and copies of the most important documents should they get wet, or store them in a
waterproof package or container. Make sure you have some proof of residency with you in case
you evacuate, you may need it to re-enter your neighborhood. This is also a good time of year to
review your current collection of documentation for relevancy and accuracy."
-City of Sacramento

written permit from the chief of police authorizing them to do so.
As of February 14, 2010 there was 0 individuals or companies legally authorized to go door to

You may not know when inside -You may not know that your dryer vent is on fire when you are
inside your home. This past week a neighbor noticed late in the evening, heavy orange smoke
coming from the roof of the home behind them. The fire department was called out and said to
have found a fire in the dryer vent. Luckily all was taken care of in a timely fashion.
HOWEVER, please make sure you clean your vents regularly.

Side Note:
The neighbor wants to thank RCCA for the community website. The RCCA website provided
detailed information of the neighborhood, so that she was able to quickly relay to the fire
department exactly what house it was; for from the street you could not see the smoke.
